Hemostat Syringe

Problem Background:

Avoidable deaths due to bleed outs continue to be an unsolved problem, especially in the battlefield environment. 90% of avoidable deaths result from severe patient wounds occurring due to bleed outs. The project focuses on this specific problem by trying to reduce blood loss in these life or death scenarios and save lives/appendages. Military personnel contain the biggest market due to the large amount of potential funding by the Department of Defense and in the Army nearly 2/3 people involved in serious injuries never made it to the medical facility before dying due to bleed out. Therefore, the need statement was as follows: an efficient, easy to use system to reduce hemorrhaging in military personnel to ultimately reduce blood loss and save lives/appendages. The strategic focus was to utilize existing resources to combat deaths due to bleed outs for wide use by creating a simple and effective solution.

Solution:

This product is a reusable syringe with insertable clotting drug containing cartridges. The syringe allows for the easy and effective drug delivery of the existing clotting drug, Celox/Celox generic, which will increase clotting and reduce hemorrhaging, thus ultimately reducing the amount of deaths due to bleed outs. The project objective was to make an easy to use drug delivery system for a hemostat mechanism. A second project objective was to make an in-house coagulating drug mixture and to expand into other markets after initial product success when targeting the military.

Project Tasks:

The project included Strategic focus and need analysis, Market research, Idea generation, Patent search, IP strategy, draft patent, Engineering design (product specification and CAD models), Human factors and safety engineering, Test protocol and quality control, FDA strategies, Business strategies and an Operating plan to back our overall business model.
